As insulating materials, today, the market for building materials has a wide range of products, for multiple applications, inside or outside. From the construction of the foundations of the house, the insulating materials can be mounted, going further with the insulation of the facade, roof, bridge and attic. For these works, materials, such as: mineral or basaltic mineral wool, expanded or extruded polystyrene plates, bituminous membranes, membrane made of high density polyethylene, various waterproofing pasta and others.

Extruse polystyrene is an inspired choice, an economic solution, with excellent results, which offers energy efficiency and humidity protection. We also find various decorative profiles of polystyrene extruded for the design of the interiors or for the creation of window sills or external plates for the insulation under the laminate parquet.
Types of adhesives for extruded polystyrene
Being used to reduce heat losses, extruded polystyrene will then be used, such as: for example:
- Esolation at the level of the floors and in particular the insulation at the level of the floor above the upper floor;
- Insulators at the level of foundations;
- Isolation of the basement and basement;
- basic insulation;
- roof insulation.
Now we all know what is the extruded polystyrene and what is used, but what do we know about the adhesive for polystyrene? What do we glue the extruded polystyrene?
You probably heard of the term adhesive and meal for the polystyrene or polyurethane sticker. Well, these stickers are used to glue these plates of extruded polystyrene.
The polyurethane sticker
The foam -type polyurethane sticker is a simple and useful solution, a useful product in any construction project. Polyurethane foam is presented in the tube, with manual application or with the special foam gun, very easy to manage.
It is important to know that the polyurethane foam is of different types, so you will have to be careful what you choose.
Depending on the purpose of the use we have:
- Polyurethane foam for assembly– used for assembly windows or doors frames;
- Polyurethane foam for isolation – intended for isolation under construction, with windows, walls, roof;
- Polyurethane foam for filling – used to fill the large joints, the cracks in the structure of the construction, the spaces existing between walls, frames and doors, filling the necklaces to the tubes, the holes in the walls and on the ceilings;
- Universal foam – used for various applications: assembly and doors, sealing open spaces, filling the empty spaces near the pipes, fixing the SA insulating panels
Depending on the place of use we have:
- Internal polyurethane foam – To fill the walls, the ceiling;
- The external polyurethane foam – for example used for the thermal insulation of the roof and the terrace;
- Universal polyurethane foam – used for various applications, regardless of the place of application.
To glue the plates of extruded polystyrene you will have to choose a polyurethane sticker suitable for the place where you will monise (internal/outside) and with a small expansion capacity. It will not be difficult to find out what it is, because most brands (bisonti, ceresit, den Braven, Soudal, etc.) has the mention: «polystyrene» on the foam tube.
As a rule, this type of adhesive is suitable for both extruded polystitis and expanded polystyrene. Some types are also suitable for basalt mineral wool.
The foam -type polyurethane sticker can be used on surfaces such as: wood, osb cards, glass, metal, cement and bituminous surfaces. It also adheres to the surfaces of the plaster, if they have previously been moistened.
Sticker and space mass
In shops and deposits of building materials you will find various types of polystyrene stickers. Most of the time, specialists use space -type adhesive for both types of polystyrene (EPS and Exp) and for basalt wool.
Some stickers suitable for gluing thermal insulation plates in polystyrene also make the protective layer strengthened with fiberglass network and are used for internal and external applications.
It is recommended that the support layer is clean, dry and stable, without friable parts or impurities that can reduce adhesion.
It is applied on all conventional, concrete, light concrete, porous cement, cement plaster, lime cement plaster, old plaster and directly on any type of masonry. It is recommended for the thermal insulation of newly built and old buildings, which will be thermally rehabilitated.
Tips for assembly of the extruded polystyrene
The assembly technique of extruded polystyrene is a very simple technique if some rules are followed, whether we apply it inside or outside. If you apply the extruded polystyrene on the facade of the house, on the whole surface or only for the insulation of the base, you will have to choose the thickness of the plates for efficiency.
Most of the time, the extruded polystyrene is chosen for: isolation of foundations, sockets, isolation of the walls of the basement, isolation of the roof, due to the greater resistance to the action of external and impact forces (mechanical shocks, intense traffic, aggressive weather conditions) and because it does not allow the passage of water vapor.

Be careful that the work surface is clean
Before starting the plating itself, you should consider cleaning the substrate, regardless of its nature. You will have to clean the dust or other impurities that could influence the adhesion of the isolation.
Check that there are no cracks, bumps, pieces of old paints on walls, signs of humidity, fat and if there are these problems, solve them before mounting the extruded polystyrene.
Specialists recommend applying a primer, if work support is very absorbent: light concrete, BCA, bricks, chalk card. This primer also called primer will be reduced by the degree of surface absorption.
Apply sufficient adhesive
Although most crafts generally apply the sticker to points, the specialists recommend applying the upper adhesive of the space on the entire surface of the polystyrene plate. In this way you will increase the adhesion to the substrate and give greater power to support the plates.
