What is oil painting?

Oil painting represents the technique that involves the use of pigments related to the help of the oil binder, usually linen, which has the property of drying very quickly, being boiled in a resin or incense pine. In addition, oil is also used, saffron or even walnut oil, which offers various properties to the respective painting, such as eliminating the possibilities of yellowing or reducing the drying period. The visible difference between these types of oils consists in the shine of painting. In addition, different types of these oils can be integrated into a painting, taking into account the effects or pigments that the artist aims to obtain.

Lately, the colors of the oil absorbable in the water have increased, partially replacing classic oils. The way they work is the dilution in the water, with the help of an emulsifier that helps them dry faster, within 1 and 3 days, unlike traditional oils, whose drying process lasts between 1 and 3 weeks.

How did the painting in oil appeared?

The oil painting technique was born between the seventh and third centuries, among the Chinese, when they made the famous Buddhist paintings and became not infamous only in the fifteenth century. Subsequently, this became the main technique in which the painters asked for works of art, starting from Northern Europe, in Dutch painting and during the period of glory of the Renaissance, completely replaced the colors of the tempera on the territory of Europe.

Oil painting techniques

When it comes to traditional techniques, an oil painting begins by drawing with the diluted paint of Oysi coal on the work canvas. Subsequently, the oil paint is combined with mineral alcohol, linen oil and various solvents that have the role of thinning of the colors, giving it a longer or shorter drying time. In addition, these solvents can also be useful for cleaning brushes.

An important rule in oil painting is that when you want to apply an additional layer of paint, it must have a greater amount of oil than the previous one, so that the final painting does not peel or break. This is a technique called «Fatty over weak».

Normally, the brushes are used to apply the paint, but there are other techniques, such as applying it with a cloth or palette knife. This type of paint remains humid for a long time, which is due to which it is possible to change the plot, the color or even the shape of the figure. At the same time, when this painting is created, as long as the paint is still wet, you can even remove an entire layer of color and insert a new one, only with a soaked cloth.

These types of paints do not dry out for evaporation, but by oxidation, which involves a surface drying time of about two weeks. Therefore, you can open the final variant of the painting only after a period of 6 months – one year. Some people say that such a painting is completely dry only after decades.

In addition to the fatty technique on the weak, there are others, such as the «often over thin», which involves the application of thicker color layers, because otherwise the paint can break due to the contraction movements. If you use this technique, it is advisable that the last layer often applies with a special painting knife.

Subsequently, you can use the «slowly quickly» technique, which means to apply those layers of colors that dry faster and above those who dry stronger. It should be noted that the drying period of a color depends on the nature of the binder and the pigment. Pigments such as natural siena, cobalty yellow and burnt shadow dry faster, compared to ivory black, chinacridone or a white titanium, which dries stronger.

Another specific technique for the oil painting is the «wet on the wet», which consists in applying the color on the wet surfaces, above the layers previously applied, which are still wet. The benefits that a painting made in this way cannot be ready for a session. Therefore, you can quickly mix the layers of colors directly at work. If, for example, you want to paint a landscape and surprise it at an exact moment of the day, this variant is ideal, because you will be able to capture all the details over the optimal time.

The «mixing» technique is among the simplest ways to apply these types of colors, be ideal for beginners and consists in the combination of wet colors and helps to create realistic paintings. Be careful, however, not to abuse it, because you can get a not very pleasant result.

The technique commonly encountered among the artists who paint in the oil is the «Subvopsis» and consists in making a sketch of the painting, so that you can add a thin layer of paint, draw a side dish, which will help you continue to work more easily.

The last technique is the one known as «Glasiu» and is, in turn, quite popular. This entails the introduction of thinner layers on some dried and opaque. The more add a new level of color, the shadow of changes in advance and the appearance will eventually be shiny. In addition, this technique promotes obtaining a multidimensional appearance and, to have the most beautiful results, it is advisable to start with an opaque, monochromatic base and gradually build transparent layers. It is worth remembering that this way of painting is quite accurate, because it is necessary to wait for each layer to be completely dry, before applying others.

Colors for oil painting

The specific colors of oil painting have a rather slow drying, compared to the usual ones and it is believed that they are used for thousands of years, the oldest painting made in this style is in Afghanistan, from 650 BC at the beginning, they were made of natural resins, extracted from different plants (nuts, poppies) or even animal proteins, technique perfected only after 1400, vegetable oil were available immediately.

They are currently obtained from two components, i.e. the binder and pigments. These pigments particles are combined with various vegetable oils, the most common is linen, which retains their shades and gives brilliance to the colors. There are, of course, synthetic pigments, which are available, there are different shades and natural, which come from mineral salts, such as zinc, lead and titanium.

Some examples of nuances that come from synthetic pigments are Prussian blue and paint, being extremely resistant and bright. The pigments also determine the level of resistance and opacity of the colors in the presence of light and the production process of a color can also require a few years, with a chemically complex structure. Almost all the colors, they have only one pigment at the base and some other relevant examples are cerulean blue, Indian yellow and the burnt Senna or even the orange cadmium.

Therefore, the colors can be divided into classic/traditional colors, which are obtained from the recipe known for the combination of the binder and pigment, soluble in water, which are a more modern alternative, combined with water, instead of classic solvents and are more ecological. Subsequently, they are the colors of alcheid oil, that is, those that dry quickly, reducing the drying time. They contain thermal transformed oil or alcheid resin, which, unlike linen oil, oxidizes much faster. Last but not less important, there are the colors of the oil in the form of a witness, which are found in the tube and are indicated, in particular, for modern painting techniques, such as «A to the first».

The first of these are the synthetic brushes with short handle, with fine and elastic hair, which form touches without interruptions. If you choose a quality brush, the results can be surprising! Oriented to those who have a carbon fiber composition. Subsequently, there are brushes with pork and short handle, which have the soil -shaped tip, perfect for oil painting. The round brushes with the thin and long tip can also be a good option, being made of synthetic and fine hair, but rather elastic, so that they can facilitate the upper control of the brush, without causing the division of the tip.

In addition, round brushes with short and thick tip are used for fairly viscous painting, just like oil. Another type of brush is the wide one with long handle and rigid synthetic hair, used above all for the dough technique, especially in the case of oil painting. Last but not least, pork brushes are ideal because they do not change their shape and are resistant to wear. Of course you will need different size brushes, depending on what you want to do with them on the canvas, but you can easily identify them on their handle.
